Botswana: Gaborone City Council (GCC) commemorated the World Economics Day in the country on March 21. The theme for the 2024 commemoration of the event was “Home Economics 3.0: A critical update”.
The World Economics Day is celebrated every year by thousands of economists and experts of the field. Deputy Town Clerk for Technical Services Molapisi Morapedi delivered the welcome remarks at the commemorating event hosted in Gaborone.
The organizers also shared several glimpses from the event on their social media. The Deputy Town Clerk for Technical Services said the 21st of March can never go unnoticed. He talked about the significance of the celebration for the people of Gaborone.
Acccording to Molapisi Morapedi, “The day is set aside to celebrate how the Home Economists around the world have provided the critical update on how they teach, research, serve homes and customers for a safe future.”
Morapedi announced that Gaborone City Council brought Home Economists professionals from across the city to commemorate the event. They were asked to share ideas on how to improve their profession.
The event celebrated Gaborone’s home economists and was attended by several city council officers. Chief Social and Community Development Officer Segopotso Dikai also attended the event commemorating World Economics Day.
She stressed that Home Economists live in a world that is constantly changing. Accordingly, it is important for them to constantly be up to date in order to unveil their potentials.
She said such a practice could help them in bridging the past and charting the future. Dikai advised Home Economists to use technology to their advantage and take their career to the next level.
Principal Home Economics Officer Nattash Maphane said the day’s objectives were to get updates from leading institutions. The celebration served as a way to understand how teaching Home Economics has changed over the years.
Maphane added that they also wanted to hear from institutions about how they are driving innovation and raising awareness of the importance of Home Economics.
She stressed that the event also presented an opportunity on how they can strengthen societies by teaching home economics. The officials want the vulnerable societies to become resilient, master their lives and have the ability to cope with future crises.
Dr Pearl Lefadola from University of Botswana, Department of Family & Consumer Services served as the event’s moderator. Meanwhile, the discussion panelists included:

Chairperson of Social & Community Development Committee Councilor Joyce Tumagole also attended the event.
