Gaborone: Mayor Austin Abraham takes lead in tackling city’s challenges

The Mayor of Gaborone City Austin Abraham has taken the charge of addressing the various issues faced by the people of the city.

The Mayor of Gaborone City Austin Abraham has taken the charge of addressing the various issues faced by the people of the city. Recently, he convened a meeting with the authorities of the Botswana Power Corporation in accordance with this charge.

The people of the city are raising concerns over power outages mostly in the Gaborone North. City Mayor was accompanied by Gaborone North Ward Development Committee members during his visit to the BPC headquarters.

 

While there, the team discussed power outages that have been happening in the Gaborone North constituency. The City council shared some images from the meeting which is being held with the aim to provide better provisions for the people.

 

The Mayor said power outages are a cause of concern because they are unplanned and frequent. He lamented that power outages are disruptive and negatively affect residents’ daily lives.  The Mayor of Gaborone appealed to the power utilities executives to find a better way of dealing with power cuts.

He implored Botswana Power Corporation to engage the public about their maintenances plans that will help the public to know when power cuts will happen.

 

BPC Chief Executive Officer David Kgobogo appreciated the visit by the City Mayor. Kgobogo acknowledged issues of unplanned power outages mostly in the Gaborone North. He said as the power utility is working around the clock to find lasting solution.

 

Kgobogo also assured the Mayor that they will also improve on their public awareness campaigns to ensure that the public is kept abreast on any issues.

 

BPC General Manager Transmissions and Distributions Mr. Gaothuse Bojosi said that some power outages are caused by vandalism which are the main cause of the power outages.

 

Bojosi added that damages cause by construction companies on their power lines are some of the issues that leads to power outages. He urged the Mayor to   engage the public on the repercussions brought about the vandalism of power infrastructures.

 

He agreed that they will improve their communication to keep the public informed.
