Malawi: A 27-year-old man, Geoffrey Matewere, has died after being electrocuted while attempting to tamper with ESCOM electricity wires in Mangochi. The victim was an electrician who Thd was working on the electrical fault in Nankhwali parish for the chief Nankumba.
Some witnesses have also claimed that the deceased did not come for work but solely with the motive of stealing.
The incident happened on 15 January 2024 in Mangochi District. A police spokeswoman in Monkey Bay, Alice Sichali, has confirmed the matter.
The Authorities have further disclosed that Matewere was a known criminal. The people of the community suspected that the deceased had entered the parish intending to steal.
“He was fiddling with the ESCOM main switch, which was outside the parish, leading to a fatal electrical shock.”
“He was later found lifeless outside the bedroom window of one of the priests,” said Public Relations Officer, Sichali for Monkey bay Police Station.
Authorities are urging the public to refrain from meddling with ESCOM wires to prevent such incidents and safeguard lives.
The police force has started their investigation into the matter and has shared their appreciation to the people of the parish for their cooperation. The people on the internet have reacted differently to the incident.
Many social media found the situation ironic as he was working with the electric wires. Users have claimed that his works have borne eternal witness. Another user suggested that people should stop touching electrical wires when they are trying to steal.
The people have claimed that justice was served in this case as the deceased, Geoffrey Matewere was a known criminal and thief. The people did not show any sympathy to the fate of the victim.
