South Africa: The games that were organized by the Department of Sport, Arts and Recreation together with the Department of Social Development, known as the Golden Games, are held every year, but due to COVID-19, they did not take place in the last two years.
The games were held in the city of Durban, where all the Districts competed in a variety of games, including indigenous games.
The Golden Games are where senior citizens compete with each other. UThukela District Municipality was part of these games as they were represented by elders from Inkosi Langalibale Local Municipality, Ukhahlamba Local Municipality and Alfred Duma Local Municipality. Unfortunately, they were beaten by other Districts.
UThukela District Councillors encouraged the elderly not to give up and be a part of these games next year. Cllr SV Shabalala, Cllr Nombali Mchunu, Cllr F Zuma, Cllr Mkhasibe, Cllr MM Khoza and Cllr Madondo were among the Cllrs who took part in the games.
UThukela District Municipality officials were also part of the games, including Municipal Manager Mr MM Mnguni, Corporate Service Manager Mr OS Mnguni and CFO Mr B Sithole.
Senior citizens complained a lot that they did not get enough time to exercise. Cllr Shabalala praised the senior citizens for their determination and promised that next year they would go out and ask for help from businessmen, as they have done in the past so that the games can be successful.
In the end, Cllr Shabalala congratulated the Districts that have done well and progressed to nationals, including Umzinyathi District Municipality, King Cetshwayo District Municipality and others.
