Mauritius: The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, Louis Steven Obeegadoo presided over the foundation stone ceremony for the construction of 126 housing units. The housing units will be constructed by the National Housing Development Company Ltd (NHDC).

The beneficiaries of the housing project are expected to come from thee vulnerable members of the community. The beneficiaries will be residents of Wooton in Curepipe. The event was attended by several government officials who wanted to witness the foundation being laid.

The housing project is being funded by the Saudi Fund for Development. The project will feature approximately 70m2 houses with three bedrooms each.

The officials said that the facilities for the houses will include adapted units for disabled individuals. It will also include individual parking space for each house, a visitors’ parking, a children’s playground, a jogging track, and a multi-purpose hall, among other amenities.

The Deputy Prime Minister delivered a brief address at the groundbreaking ceremony for the housing project. He highlighted the government’s dedication to ensuring decent living conditions for the population.

He also noted that the government is also dedicated to enhancing the people’s quality of life in the nation. He thus shared more details about the NHDC and New Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD) housing projects.

In sharing details, he said the Wooton project has already kicked off. The whose completion was expected by June 2025, aimed at meeting housing needs in the region and across Mauritius.

The Deputy Prime Minister further reaffirmed that the NHDC had successfully delivered 2,900 houses across Mauritius. He further announced that additional units would be built to meet the demand.

He emphasised the importance of such an initiative, highlighting that it was the right of every citizen to have access to a decent home.

For his part, the Parliamentary Private Secretary stressed the importance of promoting social equality and assisting those in need. They highlighted that providing housing was a key approach toeards this mandate.

Speaking about Government’s commitment to enhancing national development, he pointed out ongoing efforts in the field of road infrastructure to significantly prevent accidents and reduce congestion.
