Zambia: The Government of Zambia faces illegal logging that demands a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach as it is not merely a challenge for law enforcement.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Douty Chibamba said Sustainable forestry Management is at the heart of government efforts, and by adhering to responsible logging practices, the government aims to balance the economic benefits of the forestry industry with the imperative to conserve natural resources.
Chibamba also said that empowering local communities through sustainable forestry practices supports economic development and fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for Zambia’s natural resources.
He said this today when he officially opened the Zambia Illegal Logging Law Enforcement workshop in the Chilanga district, an inauguration between the United States (U.S) Forest Service, the Forestry Department and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
He appreciated the collaboration between Zambia and the United States Forest Service.
“We are privileged as a country to have the support of the U.S. Law Enforcement, represented here by the U.S. Forest Service. Their commitment to the cause of global environmental conservation is evident in their collaboration with us. The resources, expertise, and shared experiences they bring to this workshop will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the success of our collective endeavours,” he said.
He explained that Zambia’s forests transcend departmental boundaries, therefore demanding a united front of diverse expertise.
Meanwhile, Head of the U.S. Forest Service Beth Hahn said the U.S. recognises the importance of forests and appreciates Zambia’s challenges in managing these natural resources.
Dr Beth also said the U.S. is here to share best practices to help address illegal logging.
“The U.S government has invested in a number of programs to address illegal logging in Southern Africa. The U.S government recognises the critical importance of Zambia’s forests and natural resources for people of this country, biodiversity and livelihoods, but we also recognise the challenges that you face in managing these resources,” she said.
She pointed out that transnational organised crime and the movement of illegal timber is a very lucrative enterprise and often a very dangerous one, and Zambia must be saluted for continued efforts in this area.
She disclosed that the U.S government is committed to addressing
sustainable forest management and illegal natural resource crime in countries; therefore, investments in alternatives to charcoal and wildlife preservation are paramount.
