Malawi is joining the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Education, which falls on January 24 every year. The administration, under Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, will host a number of events.
International Day of Education was set aside by the United Nations (UN) six years ago for nations to consolidate gains made in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This year’s commemoration is being held under the theme, “Learning for Lasting Peace”, which is calling upon UN member states to reflect on the role of education in peacebuilding.
The theme, therefore, calls all stakeholders to hold hands and commit to investing in education for the betterment of society.
The International Day of Education is a commemoration of one of the most basic human rights: Education. The role of education in the upliftment of the vulnerable populace of the world cannot be denied.
Accordingly, education stakeholders worldwide take the responsibility of hosting events and celebrations. These events help the country’s administration spread cheer among the people.
At the same time, the events can spread awareness about the benefits of education among the underprivileged.
Events marking the commemoration will take place at Mkwichi Secondary School in Lilongwe. During the event, Malawi’s Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima will preside over the various celebrations and interactions
In Malawi, the government has shown commitment to see an increase in access to quality education through several interventions. The administration of the country has called for an increase in the number of school blocks.
The administration has provided textbooks, science laboratories, and libraries to several educational institutions. It is also working towards reducing the student-teacher ratio.
The administration is also working on initiatives such as increasing the availability of mentors and enhancing school leadership.
Notably, the administration has enlisted the help of several international stakeholders to uplift their educational landscape.
