Zambia: Isoka District Commissioner Jairo Simbeye has expressed deep concern over the worsening water crisis in the district. The communities within thee district have been daling with the shortages for a prolonged period.
The administration has come forward calling for urgent interventions to address the situation. The issue has been raised by many community members. The officials have shared that the speaking during a site visit to Chuwi and Kasoka water treatment plants, The District Commissioner described the situation as critical, noting that despite being in the rainy season, water levels remain significantly low.
“My office will not stand by while people struggle to access clean water,” He said. District Commissioner Simbeye said his office is actively engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution.
He further stressed the need for long-term solutions, including the construction of a dam to secure water supply in the district. “We need sustainable solutions like a dam to ensure water security for our growing population,” He stated.
A report issued by Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company attributes the shortage to climate change and an outdated water system.
The report revealed that the two main water sources, constructed in the 1950s when the district had a much smaller population, are now overwhelmed as new residential areas continue to be connected.
The company highlighted that Isoka’s customer base has grown from fewer than 500 people to around 2,500, putting immense pressure on the water infrastructure.
“To ensure equitable distribution, we have implemented water rationing, but the demand still exceeds supply,” the report stated.
Chambeshi Water has since written to the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation for support, and the Ministry has committed to procuring one borehole pump.
Efforts are underway to equip at least two boreholes as authorities work to stabilize water supply in the district. The authorities have been urge to work swiftly to address the crisis as many communities are facing various problems and issues in this matter.
