Kenya: The Principal Senior Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (PSDCCF) Charity Munyasya met with the Kenya Airways officials. The aim of the meeting was to discuss a possible partnership in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The production of the SAF is an important part of the Decarbonisation Agenda by the airline. The officials have shared that the Kenya Airways has remained dedicated to protecting the environment.

The airline  is a perfect partner of the Kenya Forest Service as they are also working towards a similar goal and end mandate. The officials have shared that the leaders have shared the airlines’ achievement in this regard.

Last year, Kenya Airways made history by becoming the first African airline to use SAF for a long haul flight. The flight ran from Nairobi in Kenya to Amsterdam, United States of America.

SAF is fuel made from sustainable sources including plants such as the yellow aleander, croton, castor seeds, cashew nut shells and oyster nuts among others. This means that the fuel is eco friendly and has less negative impacts on the environment.

Wakina Mutembei from Kenya Airways noted that through Bleriot SAF Consortium, a locally based company, Kenya has the capacity and ability to produce SAF thereby greatly improving decarbonisation programmes. He made this announcement during the meeting hosted on Wednsday

Kenya Airways is keenly focused on adoption of forests particularly in the Coastal region. There are efforts to rehabilitate and grow trees with high energy efficiency that will facilitate local production of SAF.  Munyasya welcomed the move and also encouraged the airline to investing in tree growing in other parts of Kenya in order to empower more communities. She directed the KFS team to work with Kenya Airways to come up with a Framework for Collaboration that will guide the project moving forward.
