Kenya: Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced the plans to implement the infrastructure projects at stakeholder engagement dinner, to increase the cargo volumes.
The plans for the project were announced after an impressive growth of over 100%, which was achieved in the biggest lake port, Kisumu.
Reportedly, the performance at the Kisumu Port has improved significantly by 11% to a record 127,745 MT in 2023 against the record 58,290 MT made in 2022.
Considering this, during a stakeholder engagement dinner, which was hosted at the Nyanza Golf Club last evening, the General Manager of Corporate Services – Edward Kamau, said to meet the growing demands of trade, the authority, which is investing in improving operational efficiency through the expanded capacity and modernization initiatives.
Besides Kisumu Port, Kenya Ports Authority has also revitalized piers and other small ports in the region.
Notably, the construction of the Homabay pier is currently ongoing, with others slated to begin later in the year 2024.
In the recently held Kenya Ports Authority Corporate Golf Tournament, player David Odhiambo of the Nyanza Golf Club has emerged as the winner. The golf player has garnered 41 points and played off a handicap of 25.
Yesterday, Kenya Ports Authority announced the arrival of the Chinese vessel MV Zhen Hua 24 that berthed from China to the second berth of Port of Lamu.
As per the sources, the vessel transported three Ships to Shore Gantry cranes for the Port of Lamu that arrived safely at the port on Sunday morning.
Kenya was applauded by a number of regional leaders upon the successful delivery of the Ship to Shore Gantry Cranes for the operationalization of the Port of Lamu’s first three berths.
The State Minister for Transport and Logistics of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia – Dhenge Boru, stated, “This is a new breakthrough for the connectivity of the African continent.”
The Director of the Regional Integration and Trade Division of UNECA – Dr Stephen Karinge said, “Congratulations to Kenya for this great achievement. It is a big win for the Regional Integration of the AU Agenda 2063.”
UNECA Principal Regional Advisor – Phiri-Mundia also made a statement, “wonderful, congratulations to Kenya. This acquired achievement will go a long way in facilitating cross-border trade among the LAPSET Corridor partner states and beyond.”
