Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has emerged as one of the most successful government organizations. The honour was announced at the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK) Conference 2024, that held in Nairobi under the theme ‘Optimizing Material Selection, Processing and Utilization in Engineering’.
The recognition has scribbled its name in the history of Kenya and has embraced the technology especially the port infrastructure and equipment.
KPA has not only embraced the technology but has also exemplified the theme of the conference through its strategic investments in the infrastructure and advancements.
Reportedly, the Port of Mombasa was hampered by the inefficiencies and congestion, by hindering the regional trade, back in 1990s. However, from 2000 onwards, a series of transformative initiatives was fuelled by KPA management, government support and a dedicated workforce, that turned the tide.
At present, the port is recognised globally for its efficiency, with recent World Bank rankings highlighting its top-tier performance. The Journey of KPA from stagnation to success is a testament to the power of well-engineered infrastructure and continual improvement.
Considering the ongoing projects, such as the expansion of berth 19 to 240m, 3000 TEU yard terminal and the development of smaller ports and inland waterways, further demonstrate commitment of KPA to growth and efficiency in the maritime industry.
Kenya Ports Authority is completely owned by State Corporation established through an Act of Parliament in January 1978. KPA was built to manage and operate all the scheduled seaports and Inland waterways along Kenya’s coastline.
The Port line includes Mombasa, Lamu, Kisumu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mtwapa, Kiunga, Simoni, Funzi and Vanga. KPA is also responsible for managing the Inland Container Depots in Nairobi, Eldoret and Naivasha.
Located in Mombasa, KPA aims at growing business by enriching lives. Their mission is to provide efficient and competitive port services to facilitate the global trade, along with the vision of achieving World class ports of choice.
Its major role is to understand the maritime and shipping industry plays, as a critical cog that fuels the growth of the economies through the bulk movement of cargo by sea.
