Kenyan Runner – Beatrice Chebet won a Gold medal in the Women’s 5000m race at the Paris Olympics 2024. In the same race Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon won Silver medal.
Reportedly, Chebet aged-24, earned her country’s first gold medal in Paris Olympics 2024 in the women’s 5,000-meter final with the time record of 14 min and 28.56 sec.
Second-place was bagged by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who won silver and third-place was bagged by Nadia Battocletti from Italy, who claimed a bronze medal.
As per the sources, Kipyegon, who finished second, was initially disqualified for obstruction, followed by an incident between her and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay with two laps to go.
Following an appeal, World Athletics confirmed that she had been reinstated as the silver medallist.
Tokyo 2020 champion Sifan Hassan finished the race at third in 14 min and 30 sec, whereas Italy’s Nadia Battocletti finished the race at fourth with a national record of 14 min and 31 sec.
However, the race was billed as the battle of the three fastest women in history over the distance with defending champion Hassan, reigning world champion Kipyegon and the world record holder Tsegay, all three going toe-to-toe.
Kenya’s Chebet delivered a well-measured run over the 12-and-a-half laps, before a climactic conclusion, with a sprint to the line against former world record-holder Kipyegon.
She is two-time world medallist, who not only etched her name into the history books but sank the trio’s hopes of adding the 5000m to their respective multiple gold medal attempts at these Games.
Chebet and Kipyegon, both the runners were among the front runners along with Tsegay for the majority of the race with Hassan biding her time at the back before she moved up to the field in the closing stages.
Gradually as the race reached near to the end with two laps to go there was a bit of pushing and shoving, that happened between Kipyegon and Tsegay before they latter moved to the front.
While, Tsegay’s run at the front was short-lived, as Kipyegon made her move, when there left only 500m to go with Chebet in tow.
Chebet pulled ahead with 50m, racing across the line, and added the Olympic gold to her silver and bronze, conquered from the world championships.
