Cape Town: The Power Play Tournament for Women created a hype among the city Kleinvlei. The Recreation and Parks Department of City of Cape Town has successfully concluded the second annual Power Play for Women Cricket Tournament, last weekend.
Team Kleinvlei CC (Gladiators) was announced as the winner with three wins out of the three matches and earned 12 log points.
From the same team, Carleigh Gallant was accoladed as Best Batter and Player of the Tournament. Bronwyn Abrahams was recognised as Best Fielder, whereas, Sofia Berien was considered as Best Bowler. Sasha-Lee Valentine was awarded as Best Wicket Keeper.
The tournament is an important step in supporting youth engagement and community development. Through the tournament, the Recreation and Parks Department aims to extend the support to the Kleinvlei Cricket Club founded in 2021 and mainly to promote the women’s cricket.
Club Chairman David Poggenpoel is working dedicatedly towards cricket administration and coaching, which has led him to the establishment of the Kleinvlei Cricket Club in 2021.
The club, founded three years ago has boasted both men’s and women’s teams. The women’s team has also competed at the premier league level since last year.
The cricket club offers free membership to the youth and removes the possible financial barrier to join it. it is an inclusive approach that encourages youngsters to participate, learn about the sport, stay active and connect with others in their community and neighbouring teams.
The tournament was held at the Kleinvlei Sports Field provides a platform for women to showcase their cricket skills and it also serves as a beacon of hope for the youth in the Kleinvlei Community.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health Councillor – Patricia Van der Ross said that the Power Play for Women Cricket Tournament showcases the commitment to promote the development and impact of women’s sport in the communities.
Councillor Ross said, “Through such initiatives, we aim to empower young people and foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.”
Van der Ross mentioned, “Amid the daily challenges of crime and unemployment, cricket offers a recreational activity that promotes teamwork and social interaction. It also encourages communication and co-operation.”
The tournament was supported by several stakeholders such as Sub Council 21. Local councillors through ward allocated funding, City’s Disaster Risk Management, Kleinvlei MFMC, Local Neighbourhood Watch and SAPS.
The 2024 tournament saw the participation of four teams – Kleinvlei CC (Gladiators), Hanover Park Cricket Club, Curro Durbanville and Durbanville Composite (Renegades).
