Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) claimed that improving port efficiency requires a holistic approach that combines the adoption of automation, with effective collaboration among stakeholders and consistent investment in infrastructure development.
According to KPA, by adopting these strategies, ports can respond more quickly to market demands, boost productivity and stay competitive in the global supply chain.
Recently, a members engagement session was arranged in Nairobi with the Shippers Council of East Africa and Kenya Association of International Cargo Consolidators. During the session, Kenya Ports Authority assured stakeholders of its commitment to continually address challenges while seizing new opportunities to transform business processes into more efficient and cost-effective ones.
Considerably, several initiatives have been lined up for implementation, with the Authority planning to scale up automation, invest in more equipment and manage the capacity and traffic movements at port facilities through infrastructure development.
Moreover, the transition to full automation is currently underway a KPA has commenced the upgradation work of the terminal operating and SAP systems to simplify processes and minimise system downtimes for faster processing of cargo and documents.
In addition to this initiative, KPA is very keen to automate the application and processing of waiver requests to enhance the transparency and guarantee its faster processing.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has also prioritized the investment in equipment acquisition to match the growth in cargo volumes. This year in 2025, the Port of Mombasa will receive an additional ten Rubber – Tyred gantry cranes and twenty new terminal tractors to further enhance cargo handling.
Considering this, the Managing Director (MD) of KPA – Capt. William Ruto assured the business community of their commitment to stakeholder collaboration to ensure synchronization and alignment in service delivery for efficient trade facilitation.
MD Ruto further noted that the Port of Mombasa is not experiencing any congestion, with operations running smoothly. The improved port efficiency will support in the development of Kenya and its port services.
