Kenya: The Port of Mombasa is projected to handle a 1.8 million TEUs project by the end of the year 2024. The Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) – Captain William Ruto, highlighted the impressive performance and announced that it has surpassed 1 million TEUs.
Surpassing 1 million TEUs KPA has reached to a total number of 1,003,208 TEUs. Speaking in a press conference during the inaugural visit of MV Ever Vim at the Port of Mombasa, Captain Ruto attributed that the success to the port’s modernization efforts which consisted of a dedicated workforce and enhanced operational efficiency.
Earlier in 2023, the Port of Mombasa handled 1.6 million 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) with a significant increase from the 1.45 million TEUs which was recorded in 2022.
During the event, Captain William Ruto presented a certificate of first call to the captain of MV Ever Vim, Liang Wei by acknowledging the vessel’s maiden arrival.
The Managing Director stated clearly that the presence of MV Ever Vim was spectacular and was owned by the Evergreen Shipping Line. It underscored the growing confidence that majorly shipping lines have in the Port of Mombasa.
Noting that the port has recently welcomed MV Ever Vow, a vessel from the same shipping line, further solidified its position as a preferred port of call for shipping and port operations.
Reportedly, the newly built Modern Vessel (MV) Ever Vim by Evergreen Marine Corporation made her maiden voyage to the Port of Mombasa, recently. It is a 3110-TEU capacity vessel that is built with green shipping technology and is expected to discharge 2,499 TEUs.
The particular of the ship include a Length Overall of 209.8 M, a draft of 11.5 M and a Gross Tonnage of 35,697. Notably, it is the 12th first time caller vessel to dock at the Port this year, in 2024.
Port of Mombasa is situated on the site of Africa’s oldest surviving harbours. It can be traced back long before the arrival of the Portuguese explorers to a time when Arabian dhows called at the Old Port on the north side of Mombasa Island.
