South Africa: The KwaZulu-Natal Government will be embarking on an intensive community mobilisation campaign against crime following a spate of violent crimes, including gruesome incidents of multiple murders and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.
The Provincial Government, led by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, will host a Crime Fighting Imbizo at KwaNdengezi Sports Field on Sunday, 16th April 2023.
The Members of the Executive Council will use the Crime Fighting Imbizo to outline short, medium- and long-term interventions to improve safety in the area and, at the same time, promote and improve relations between police and the community at large.
The Imbizo will be preceded by an inspection in loco of a site where a new Police Station will be built in KwaNdengezi and visits to other key projects in the area.
Members of the Executive Council will also visit Mariannhill and KwaNdengezi Police Stations, where they will hand over Park Homes to be used as Victims-Friendly rooms for victims of GBV. The visits to the stations will see MECs engaging with senior police officials to monitor progress on GBV cases and deliberate on policing challenges in the area.
Last week, KwaNdengezi witnessed a gruesome incident of GBVF where a husband killed his wife and later turned a gun on himself, leaving their two children orphaned.
The MECs will also be going to pay a visit to Gogo Wessels, who has been living in the area for more than 30 years in a dilapidated structure. Dignity will soon be restored to Gogo Wessels as a site has been secured to build a decent RDP house for her.
In an effort to boost food security in the area, MECs will hand over a static tank to Sizakancane Community Gardens’ ten beneficiaries and seedlings to selected members of the community.
