The Province of KwaZulu-Natal, which is still reeling from the devastating and climate-induced flood disasters that took place in April and May 2022, will take part in the upcoming COP27 climate change conference at Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

The provincial delegation will be led by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and Leader of Government Business Siboniso Duma. The Province will participate in negotiations and engage in action plans to build climate-resilient communities, reduce the carbon footprint and deployment of environmentally friendly and green technologies, and benefit from the new renewable industries as part of the just transition while adopting climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.

4. CONDOLENCES TO FAMILIES WHO LOST THEIR LOVED ONES DURING THE MARIANNHILL ROAD CRASH

The Chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government extended heartfelt condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the horrific multiple-vehicle crash that took place near the Mariannhill toll plaza on Tuesday.

In particular, he conveyed his deepest condolences to the families and friends, including that of Honourable Member of the Legislature Thakur Rajbansi, who lost two members of her family.

We are gravely disturbed and saddened by yet another fatal road crash which once again has the common denominator of trucks. We have called for stricter policing of public roads and for all delinquent truck operators who flout the rules of the road and who behave with disdain to be subjected to the harshest possible consequence management measures, said Chairperson.

In the meantime, as we approach the Festive Season and peak holiday travel, on 11 November 2022, the Province will unveil the state of readiness plan as the Province prepares to host visitors and ensure the safety of citizens during this busy period. This year’s safety plan will focus on road safety, stock theft, liquor law enforcement, gender-based violence, drugs, roadblocks, cordon and search, stop and search and other intelligence-driven operations, said Chairperson.

5. SMART PROVINCE TAKING SHAPE IN KZN

Last month the Province launched the first Mobile Digital Analytics Skills Lab at Orient Heights in Pietermaritzburg. With the launch of the Mobile Digital Skills Lab project, our learners take a giant to be part of new possibilities which are anchored on digital Technology.

This is part of the Connected Smart Province Project which will see especially young people being trained in various skills linked to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. To take advantage of this digital economy, young people must start working on Robotics, Drone Technology, Mechatronics and other technologies being experienced today.

We intend to expose our learners from a young age to Space Technology, the Internet of Things, Data Analytics, Multimedia Production l and 4D Technology. Already 20 young people are undergoing training in Digital Skills and Drone Technology that will be used in a number of sectors, including smart Technology and in intelligent transport systems to monitor and recover accidents and save lives.

Chairperson also claimed to launch similar labs in the rest of the Province, district by district, in the coming years.
