Kweneg District Council appoints new Council Chairman, Read

Kweneng District Council has appointed Olebile K. Mafala as the new council secretary. He will replace outgoing council chairman Goleba Kgari.

Botswana: The Kweneng District Council has appointed Olebile K. Mafala as the new council secretary. The new addition to the district council will be replacing the outgoing council chairman Goleba Kgari.

The announcement of the appointment was made by the district council on February 2, 2024. The officials have welcomed the new Council chairman with open arms. They have also provided some details about the previous experiences and contributions of Chairman Mafala

Olebile K. Mafala is from Tlokweng by birth and has once worked for KwDC. He indicated that though he is new to his position, he is not new to the Ministry.

According to Mafala hardwork, resilience and patience gave him this new position in Kweneng District Council. He stated that he worked for several Local Authorities like Tsabong Landboard, Kgatieng District Council, Kweneng District Council, Phikwe Town Council, Gaborone City Council and Technical Services.

According to Mafala, he holds a BSE Hons Quantity Surveying holder. When he left Kweneng District Council he worked as Chief Architecture & Building Service officer to Phikwe Town Council.

He left Phikwe in 2017 for Gaborone City Council on promotion to Deputy Towa clerk-Technical Services. He stated that he is not new to the Kweneng District Council and was involved in some major projects, like Shadishadi and Mantshwabisi RADS hostels.

Chairperson Olebile K. Mafala expressed his gratitude for the decentralization of District councils as this will bring services closer to the people and ultimately reduce public complaints. He further stated that his main aim as the Council secretary is to make sure that the ‘Batho pele’ motto is put to practice which is also in line with vision 2036 ‘Acheving prosperity for all.

He indicated that he wants the community to choose Kweneng District Council as stated in KwDC slogan “Council of Choice”.

He also indicated that his main focus in the District will health, safety & be communiy’s environment, he elaborated that health includes access to nutrition medical services, physical & psychosocial support etc., whilst safety includes shelter & access to quality infrastructure and environment referred to general upkeep of the District covering cleanliness, maintainance of vegetation, roads, buildings, etc.

Mafala stated that teamwork is the main key to successful governance. In this case, he will collaborate and engage key stakeholders to provide access to quality service.

He also indicated that he would align government machinery with the National Development & Presidencial agendas in order to cater for unemployed National Service & Internship participants by engaging stakeholders such as government departments, parastatals & private entities, and Universities in order to create employment.

Lastly, Mafala indicated that staff welfare is what he will prioritize while making decisions. He stated that employee’ satisfaction results in Improved productivity
