The Police force stationed at the Gateway Mall in Lilongwe have arrested two men for attacking and robbing a woman. The suspects stole the women’s handbag at Michiru Junction in Area 9, on Friday in the early hours of the evening.
The Lilongwe Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Khumbo Sanyiwa has confirmed that they have identified the suspects as Victor Tsikani and Daud Banda. The first suspect is 24 years old while the second is reportedly around 20.
The suspects attacked the victim who was walking home after clocking out from work at around 17:00 hours.
He said the victim’s handbag had a National Identification card, National Examination Board Identification Card, sun glasses and K20,000 cash.
The police officers have shared that they have started the investigation into the matter with the arrest of the suspects. The Police officers have shared that they were able to arrest the suspecta only after the Gateway Mall Police intervened.
The Police force rushed to the scene to rescue the first suspect (Tsikani). At this point, an angry mob wanted to burn the man alive for his involvement in criminal activities.
Mob justice, which is both illegal and inhumane, is becoming more and more prevalent in the communities. The public is taking law into their own hands which is becoming a major cause of concern for the community.
“Upon interrogation by the members of the Police force, the suspect disclosed the identity of his accomplice. He said that Banda had escaped the scene with the stolen bag,” Kunyiwa explained.
Police later arrested Banda and successfully recovered the stolen bag.
The police force has shared that the two suspects are part of gangs who have been terrorising people during the night. They are active at Michiru Road Junction and African Bible College (ABC) areas.
Tsikani is a resident of the Mchitakupha Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Chadza in Lilongwe. On the other hand, Banda comes from Jahito Village, TA Liwonde in Machinga.
The suspects will be taken to the court soon to answer robbery charges.
