Zambia: Police in Lusaka have received reports of Million Banda assaulting a 26-year-old student. The police force has started an investigation into the matter and has apprehended the suspect.
According to the officials, the 46-year-old suspect is employed as a Driver at Rocks Student Apartment. He assaulted a student identified as Margret Banda who is a student at the Lusaka Health Institute in Silverest.
As per the police officials, the incident happened on Tuesday, February 20 at around 23:00 Hours. At the time, the suspect was at his workplace at Rocks Student Apartment.
Margret Banda, a Student approached the suspect to retrieve a gate key from Banda. The Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga shared the details of the incident with the general public.
According to the victim, she wanted the keys so that she could meet her friend who was waiting for her outside. However, the encounter took a violent turn as Banda began verbally abusing and physically assaulting the student.
The police officer claimed that the situation escalated further when Banda reportedly pointed an unknown firearm at the student threatening her safety.
As per the PPRO, the student was able to convince her assaulter to lower the weapon and escape the situation. The student then decided to report the incident to Chelston Police Station.
Hamoonga says police successfully apprehended Million Banda. At the time of the arrest, the suspect owned a silver colored Star Fire pistol, Serial number DK 744912, Calibre 9mm along with 6 rounds of ammunition.
Police have since urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of violence. Banda is currently in police custody, facing charges of threatening violence and assault. The police have opened a case docket and are conducting further inquiries.
The people of the country have shared their disappointment over the situation. Some social media users have expressed their dislike of the gun culture urging police to take action. Whoever has a gun without documents should be made to hand them to the police.
