Mauritius: The Mauritius Boxing Federation (MBF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, proceeded yesterday, at the National Boxing Centre in Vacoas, with the remittance of equipment to the 13 boxers of the National Team participating in the forthcoming Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) 2023 in Madagascar.
The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, the President of the MBF, Pascal Telvar, and other personalities were present on the occasion. Following the remittance ceremony, Toussaint paid a visit to the national volleyball team at the Pandit Sahadeo Gymnasium in Vacoas.
In a statement, Minister Toussaint recalled that four years ago, Mauritius hosted the 2019 IOIG Games and bagged several medals. “The success of these Games,” he remarked, “was due to several reasons, the main one being the teamwork displayed by each and every one.”
Furthermore, Toussaint expressed hope that the Mauritian Team would make the country proud by winning more medals than in the previous Games that Mauritius hosted. On this note, the Sports Minister called on the participants to promote a good image of the country and to follow and respect all instructions as they would be the ambassadors of Mauritius in Madagascar.
For his part, the President of the MBF expressed confidence in the pugilists, adding that the team was targeting a maximum number of gold medals. He further recalled that in the IOIG 2019, boxing had brought home seven gold medals and two silver medals.
On this score, he remarked that the Boxing Team could do better than seven gold medals this time and reiterated that the boxers would give their best shot in the tournament to keep the National flag flying high at these Games.
About the preparation of the boxers, Telvar stressed that the participants were in residential training until 22 August 2023 and were being well supervised by their trainers.
