Mauritius: The Geranium Municipal Gymnasium was inaugurated yesterday, by the Mayor of the Municipal Council of Beau Bassin – Rose Hill, Jean Didier David Utile, at Residence Geranium in Camp Levieux, in the presence of the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, the Member of Parliament, Ivan Leslie Collendavelloo, and other personalities.
This gymnasium, to the tune of Rs 30 million and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, aims to cater for the needs and welfare of the inhabitants of the region and provide the youth and senior citizens with a suitable place to practice sports and leisure activities.
In her address, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo indicated that the new gymnasium is in line with Government’s commitment to encourage Mauritians, in particular the youth, to practice sports and to promote a sporting culture among citizens. She underlined that several visits were carried out before and during the construction of this gymnasium so as to ensure that it is accessible to everyone, including the elderly and disabled persons.
The Minister encouraged citizens to practice regular physical activity in order not to be tempted by social ills such as the consumption of drugs, alcohol, and smoking, as these have a negative impact on the life of a person. She thus appealed to inhabitants of the region to make the most of this modern facility and maintain a good diet as well as a healthy lifestyle in order to be more performing and efficient in their day-to-day tasks.
Furthermore, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo recalled that several amenities had been put at the disposal of citizens in Beau Bassin – Rose Hill in order to enhance their quality of life. These are, among others: Daycare centres, Community centres, and Multipurpose complexes.
For his part, Collendavelloo underscored the need for all institutions, including Ministries and Municipal Councils, to work together so as to improve the living condition of inhabitants of a region. This gymnasium will be useful in promoting a healthy lifestyle and unity in the region while helping to prevent the youth from being affected by the drug scourge, he added.
As for the Mayor, he indicated that this gymnasium is a modern one, equipped with all sports amenities for the benefit of the inhabitants of the region, and is in line with Government’s vision to encourage the population to practice sports. Utile encouraged inhabitants of the region to make good use of these facilities while ensuring that the gymnasium clean is kept clean and in good condition.
