Africa: The Executive Mayor, Cllr Eugene Johnson, today paid a visit to the family of the late Thabang Klaas in New Brighton.
The 6-year-old was allegedly murdered by his mother’s ex-boyfriend, who stole him from his grandmother’s house in New Brighton on Friday and allegedly strangled him in the bushes between Mathys Grounds and Wells Estate in Swartkops.
The victim’s mother, Nandipha Klaas, characterized her son as a shy, lively, and people-loving boy whose warmth could be felt even by strangers.
Devastated, Mayor Johnson said that she feels very sorry for the family as the child was very young.
“I have instructed my office to support the family during this time, and we will support the family in whatever way they require,” she added.
Also speaking at the gathering, Mayoral Coordinator Nontombi Nama said that “we are very disturbed by this case because it was done by a person Thabang considered as a father.”
“As a community, we feel cheated because children are our future,” she said.
Members of the community are invited to come out in force to support the family, as the suspect is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow in Motherwell.
