Kenya: Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry organization has organized a ceremonial tree planting. The event was hosted at Nairobi Arboretum on Wednesday, with the aim of commemorating Mazingira Day.
The tree plantation exercise will be a major step towards the government’s commitment to environmental restoration. The event symbolized the ministry’s dedication to a greener Kenya and set the stage for important announcements.
The officials have shared that it is important for the leadership of the country to constantly work for the protection of the environment. The President of Kenya has  announced a National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy.
The initiative seeks to help in increasing the forest cover in the country. Thee officials have shared that it is important for the nation to have approximately 30% forest cover in order to do their part in the protection of environment.
The officials have shared that this initiative will also help in reversing the affects of climate change in the country. The Kenya Forest Service officials have shared that the people of the country are doing their part in meeting this mandate.
The government is also organizing several other initiatives to support the environment protection goals of the nation
The Cabinet Secretary for Environment has announced the plans to engage over 20,000 young people in an extensive cleanup of Nairobi River. The initiative will take place over the next 18 months. The programme forms a  part of the Climate Worx program.
The aim of the project is to restore the river to its former glory and combat environmental degradation.
The CS also warned garbage collectors illegally dumping waste into Nairobi River. He has said the government has a zero-tolerance approach to such practices moving forward.
Kenya Forest Service (KFS) supported the event with an informative exhibition, showcasing their crucial role in forest conservation and environmental protection.
The CS highlighted that this Mazingira Day marks a significant opportunity for the community to come together
The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Principal Secretary State Department of Forestry Mugambi Gitonga and Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko and other senior government officials.
