Lephalale: The MEC for Sport, Arts, and Culture, Mme Nakedi Kekana, spearheaded an intervention delegate to address the stalled construction at the Botshabelo Library site on Saturday.

Responding to community demands for local employment and the subcontracting of local businesses, MEC Kekana emphasized the contractor’s obligation to foster local job creation and stimulate economic activity through supporting local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).

The intervention included the presence of key figures such as Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor Aaron Mokgetle, Waterberg District MMC Jack Maeko, as well as officials from the Public Works and Sport, Arts, and Culture Departments.

The community commends the MEC’s swift action and appreciates the immediate continuation of the project. The contractor has committed to delivering the completed library by the end of April 2024.

MEC Kekana stated, “The contractor will ensure the hiring of locals as expected, completing the long overdue work urgently. We, as a Department, are pleased with the community’s appreciation of the intervention, and they have committed to collaborating with the contractor to finalize the project that should have been completed months ago.”

MEC Kekana further appeals to communities with ongoing construction projects to prioritize constructive engagements with contractors rather than halting progress.

Moreover, this construction project will increase the demand for employment and involvement of local businesses in the project.

During the intervention, MEC Kekana highlighted the contractor’s responsibility to promote local job creation and boost economic activity by engaging with Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in the area.

The presence of Mayor Aaron Mokgetle and Waterberg District MMC Jack Maeko, along with officials from the Departments of Public Works and Sport, Arts, and Culture, emphasized the collaborative effort.

The contractor has committed to completing the library by the end of April 2024 and ensuring the hiring of the local workforce as per expectations.

In a broader appeal, MEC Kekana encourages communities with ongoing construction projects to prioritize constructive engagements with contractors rather than resorting to actions that might halt progress. The emphasis is on fostering collaboration for the collective advancement of projects and the community.
