MEC Nakedi Kekana officially launches Annual Mapungubwe Arts Festival 2022

South Africa: It is all systems go for the annual Mapungubwe Arts Festival 2022. The activities started with a bang when MEC Nakedi Kekana officially launched the festival in Polokwane recently.
During the Mapungubwe Media launch of the Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, MEC Naledi Sibanda-Kekana said for the first time in the history of Mapungubwe Arts Festival, 95% of local music artists will have the opportunity to perform. “The main aim is to promote social cohesion and nation building,” said MEC Kekana.
The launch was followed by various activations and mobilisation of the community through media campaigns.
On the 2nd of December, with a Street Cultural Carnival on the coming Friday, the City of Polokwane will come to a standstill during the spectacular Cultural Street Carnival. The street carnival parade will begin at SABC Park ending at Jack Botes Park.
The carnival showcased Limpopo’s cultural diversity through various traditional groups’ performances from all five districts.
The cultural street carnival will be proceeded with Mapungubwe Marathon on Saturday morning from 5:00 at Polokwane Cricket Club, then followed by the weeklong Craft Market and Exhibitions (4-9 December 2022) at Polokwane Library Gardens and Comedy Night at Jack Botes Hall featuring Mashabela Galane, Thabang ER, Noko Moswete and others.
Mapungubwe Arts Festival 2022 will close off with an open-air concert at Polokwane Cricket Club featuring, amongst others, Makhadzi, King Monada, Penny Penny, Pleasure, Dr Rebecca Malope, Dr Winnie Mashaba, Dr Joe Shirimane, Dr Colbert Mukwevho, MaJoy, Candy Tsa Mandebele and many more.
The Annual Mapungubwe Arts Festival is the flagship project of Limpopo’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It is viewed as a big melting pot of heritage, culture and tradition of the province; the festival is intended to foster social cohesion and nation building through a collective celebration and embracing of great arts, culture, heritage and lifestyle.
