Zambia: The Minister of Health in the government of Zambia, Dr. Elijah Muchima has confirmed the contamination of the Kafue River in Kitwe. The authorities have confirmed that the river has been used to dump harmful chemical substances, The chemicals that the medical team have found in the river are a serious threat to both human and aquatic life, including fish.
The situation, as detailed by the Ministry of Health confirms that the water in the river is not fit for consumption. The community has shared that it is crucial for them to remain cautious. The Ministry of Health has asked the people in the surrounding communities to refrain from using water from the Kafue River for any purpose until the Ministry confirms it is safe.
The Ministry of Health has claimed that aquatic animals in the river are dying due to exposure to the chemicals in Kafue River. The chemicals that are present in the river have been tested and found to be extremely toxic to these harmful chemicals.
The ministry has asked the public, in strong terms, not to consume any fish from the river. They have claimed that there is a significant risk of poisoning from the products of the river. Additionally, members of the public are strictly advised not to trade or sell fish from the river to others.
The Ministry of Health has also issued a reminder to the public that, under Part III of the Food Safety Act of 2019, it is an offence to sell dangerous food. The definition of the dangerous foods include contaminated animal products such as fish and other aquatic life that may be affected by poisonous substances.
Any attempt to consume or sell fish from the contaminated river will be met with strict enforcement of the law. The officials have shared that the offenders may be fined or taken into custody. The Ministry has urged everyone to act responsibly and avoid taking advantage of this unfortunate situation.
