Botswana: The President of Botswana, Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi, will participate at the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government. The summit is scheduled to be held on 17th August 2024 in Zimbabwe with several heads of state attending.
The President has already reached the capital city Harare for the summit and was greeted by several officials. The 44th edition of the SADC Summit will be hosted by the Republic of Zimbabwe.
The nation would serve as the incoming SADC Chair for the next tenure. The 44th edition of the event would be hosted under the theme, ‘‘Promoting Innovation to Unlock Opportunities for Sustained Economic Growth and Development towards an industrialised SADC’’.
The leaders of the SADC will be discussing a variety of topics for the mutual benefit for the people of the country. The President’s team has shared some images from his arrival in Harare
The Summit will touch on a variety of topics. These include reviewing progress on the implementation of Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030.
The heads of state will also as well as receive updates on key issues, such as the region’s peace and security agenda.
The 44th SADC Summit will include the handover of the SADC Chairship. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola will handover the chairmanship to the President of Zimbabwe Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.
A series of Meetings preceded the Summit, including the SADC Council of Ministers, which was held on the 13th-14th August 2024. Further the SADC Organ Troika Summit, will take place on 16th August 2024.
During the 44th edition of the SADC Summit, the SADC Heads of State and Government will participate in High-Level Events. The officials have shared that the SADC leaders will visit the Geo Pomona Waste Management Facility,
They are also scheduled to visit the Museum of African Liberation which showcases African culture and liberation history. The President of Botswana is accompanying a delegation including Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Senior Government Officials.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi and his delegation of ministers and will return to Gaborone from their trip on Sunday.
