Kenya: The luxury cruise vessel MV Viking Sky gave a second call to the Port of Mombasa. This time it brought 789 passengers and 476 crew members along with it.
Viking Sky docked on Thursday at the port and became the fifth vessel to sail to the Indian ocean coast. Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) anticipated two more calls before the season circuit comes to an end. The vessel, belonging to Viking Ocean Cruises, sailed from Seychelles. It will further remain in Mombasa for three days before her onward voyage.
According to tourism stakeholders, the vessel has extended its stay, particularly being crucial with most of the visitors that are expected to tour the country’s national parks. This surge in visitors will have a ripple effect on tourism in the Country.
Manager of Security Services – Tony Kibwana welcomed the vessel and her passengers on behalf of Managing Director Capt. William Ruto. He said that the arrival is critical in marketing the port and the country at large as key tourist destination.
Kibwana stated that the arrival of this vessel underscores the importance of Mombasa and country in terms of handling cruise passengers. They are looking forward to more vessels that are arriving in the coming months.
While giving his speech, Director General KWS – Professor Erustus Kanga said that the arrival of the vessel is a strong signal for Kenya’s growing position as premier destination along the Indian ocean cruise circuit. He said that they expect more tourists to visit games parks that have introduced attractive incentives, which aims at promoting the cruise industry.
Kang highlighted that the arrival is not just another cruise stop each vessel, and every visitor reflect increasing global confidence in Kenya as a safe, diverse, and experience-rich destination. For them, this moment is also an opportunity to showcase a unique model of tourism one that seamlessly connects the coastal heritage with the world-renowned wildlife experiences.
MV Viking Sky marks exactly one year since her maiden call to Mombasa with 845 passengers and 469 crew on board that showcased Mombasa as major destination for cruise liners.
