Nigeria: The National Women Cricket team beats New Zealand by two runs in the ICC U-19 Women Cricket World Cup. The team created history and earned their first-ever victory, despite of the rain. The match was sealed with a thrilling disciplined bowling and exceptional fielding, in Malaysia on Jan 20, 2025.
Lucky Piety was considered as player of the match and shines in the clash between Nigeria and New Zealand. It was a solid knock of 18 runs off 22 balls and a sharp bowling spell of 1 wicket for just 8 runs in 3 overs. Lucky delivered a game-changing performance that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Their debut appearance was spoiled a little by rain in the early part of the cricket match, washing out Nigeria’s opening game against Samoa. Match against New Zealand was also affected by the weather and reduced the game to 13 overs per side.
Nigeria opted to bowl first where New Zealand delivered an early blow as Hannah O’Connor dismissed Victory Igbunedion for one run. Skipper Lucky Piety steadied the innings which was supported by Lilian Udeh who top-scored with a crucial 19 off 25 deliveries. Nigeria concluded their innings at 65/6 setting a modest target.
In response to this, New Zealand chased on a disastrous note when Kate Irwin ran out on the very first ball. Player, Usen Peace struck shortly after dismissing Emma McLeod who left New Zealand reeling at 7/2. Anika Todd and Eve Wolland attempted to rebuild by taking the score to 31 before Piety’s breakthrough which shifted the momentum.
As the team needed to play the final over, Tash Wakelin batted on 18 and stood as last hope of New Zealand. Udeh bowled the decisive over and showcased the exceptional composure under pressure. She conceded four singles in her first four deliveries and bowled a dot ball on the fifth.
New Zealand then managed only two runs on the last ball that resulted in Wakelin’s run-out and sealing the two-run victory of Nigeria. This victory placed Nigeria at the top of Group-C with three points ahead of South Africa, Samoa and New Zealand.
New Zealand remained one of the favourite groups but failed to capitalise on their opportunities while struggling to counter the discipline bowling of Nigeria and their spirited fielding.
Nigeria will next face South Africa in their final group stage game with their sky-high confidence after the historic win and will aim to continue to run their dream in the tournament.
