Cape Town: The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urged beach lovers, anglers and coastal path walkers to exercise heightened caution as the full moon spring tide peaks on Monday, Jan 05, 2026. It is a natural phenomenon where the sun, moon and earth align during a full moon which significantly amplifies the gravitational pull, on oceans which results in dramatic tidal fluctuations.
As the full moon nears, beachgoers that should prepare for a weekend of heightened tidal variations, that can have serious implications for those enjoying coastal activities. The NSRI is particularly concerned about the risks associated with the stronger tidal currents that come with spring tides. It urged all to stay vigilant over the next few days.
What happens during Spring Tide
Beach visitors should be aware that spring tides bring about notable changes in the water levels. First are the higher high tides, in this water levels may rise significantly by reaching further up the shoreline than normal.
Second is the lower low tides, more of the seabed will be exposed as water levels dip below average. Third one is the increased tidal range, which is the difference between high and low tide levels that will reach its peak, leading to greater tidal extremes.
Risks caused by spring tides
With these changes in water levels risks increase, particularly for those engaging in activities on or near the water such as rip currents, rip tides, coastal hiking hazards and fishing precautions.
Necessary safety measures
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the NSRI recommends various safety precautions for beach and coastal activities which considers Swimming Safety, under which they say to always swim at lifeguard-protected beaches and stay between the flags to avoid rip currents. Be vigilant during outgoing tides in the late afternoon when rip currents are strongest.
Precautions for Hiking, plan hikes meticulously by avoiding trails that could become cut off during high tide. Fishing advisories, shoreline anglers should maintain a safe distance and consider wearing a life jacket, also carrying flotation equipment.
For Boating and Paddling, essential safety equipment is a must, along with a charged cell phone in a waterproof pouch.
