St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has announced the proceeds of Prime Minister’s Gala from this year, that will provide financial assistance of $15,000 to each Breast Cancer Association operating currently in the nation.
Reportedly, such contribution will strengthen the critical work carried out by these organisations, which support women through screening, treatment, recovery and emotional care during some of the most challenging periods of their lives. Major efforts were increased to guide families and raise awareness about breast cancer across the federation.
Prime Minister Drew reaffirmed that commitment by his government to stand with women is affected by the disease and supporting initiatives that improve access to care and community-based assistance. He emphasised the importance of unity, compassion and sustained advocacy, in confronting breast cancer and improving its outcomes.
During his addressal, PM Drew explained that these initiatives reflect the continued focus on health support programmes and collective action to uplift the vulnerable communities and families nationwide.
Recently, PM Drew announced an updated on the new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility at Joseph N. France General Hospital, which is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the Health Transformation Agenda of the Government.
While giving the opening statement in the National Assembly on February 12, 2026, Prime Minister said that the project is 90% complete and is expected to reach 98% soon, as then it will be able to receive the MRI equipment.
He mentioned that the construction work requires highly specialised engineering and strict adherence to international safety standards. He noted that such a facility was never built to these specifications in St. Kitts and Nevis. Continuous consultation is required with global experts that ensures compliance and quality throughout the process.
Once it gets operational, the MRI unit is expected to expand its access to advance diagnostic care and will reduce the need for overseas treatments. It will shorten the waiting time and will support early detection of conditions such as cancer, neurological disorders and musculoskeletal injuries.
The MRI facility is nearing completion and represents a transformative step for the healthcare system of the nation. It will reinforce broader government investments in infrastructure, digital health records (as St. Kitts and Nevis decides to go paperless), expansion in workforce and advanced medical technology to deliver more accessible and equitable services at local level.
