St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew appeared on Freedom FM’s Issues programme on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 1:30 p.m. for a formal interview. There he addressed various issues of national significance.
During the interview, PM Drew outlined a wide-ranging national development agenda, that emphasised self-reliance, economic empowerment, and sustainable growth. He introduced a historic agricultural insurance programme, backed by a government investment of $1 million.
The initiative provides full coverage for farmers, fishers, and livestock producers against hurricanes and droughts through a parametric system that enables automatic payouts without any need for claims to process. The government will bear the full cost, that aims to de-risk agriculture and stimulate greater investment in the sector.
In education sector, construction of the long-delayed Basseterre High School is now actively underway. This project, previously saw $21 million that they spent with no progress. Now it is being advanced by using modern pre-fabrication technology in partnership with Preconco Limited. Its completion is expected within 18 to 24 months, with a focus on efficiency, job creation, and modern building standards.
St. Kitts and Nevis government is also set to launch a Youth Economic Empowerment Bureau within the coming weeks. This initiative will serve as a one-stop hub that will offer business support, training, mentorship, and access to grants and soft loans, with the goal of removing bureaucratic barriers and fostering entrepreneurship among young people.
Drew also highlighted the opportunities within the yachting sector. The Prime Minister noted the potential for approximately 50 new businesses, ranging from food supply and floral services to logistics and provisioning. A dedicated workshop is planned to connect youth with these emerging opportunities.
On the international front, the government is rolling out a global exposure strategy designed to expand citizens’ access to overseas markets. The first initiative will see over 100 participants travelling to Nigeria and will reflect a broader push to strengthen ties with Africa and participate in platforms such as the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit.
Prime Minister Drew also addressed energy and cost-of-living concerns. He confirmed the continuation of fuel subsidies alongside investments in renewable energy, including solar and geothermal projects.
Meanwhile, major national developments include a desalination plant, new hospital, and expansion of water infrastructure that are expected to significantly improve living standards. Dr. Drew reaffirmed his administration’s philosophy and underscored a shift from dependency to self-reliance. He encouraged citizens to embrace productivity, innovation, and global thinking.
