St Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, attended the IMF’s in-person Roundtable on CARTAC Strategy and Financing on April 12, 2023, in Washington, DC. This is the first time for PM Terrance Drew to be a part of the World Bank / IMF Spring Meetings
During a meeting with the Central Bank Governors and Caribbean Ministers of Finance organized by the Western Hemisphere Department (WHD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Prime Minister delivered remarks on the topic of “Reaping Opportunities from Green Energy.” The Deputy Director of the WHD, Nigel Chalk, presided over the meeting, where the PM was invited to speak.
PM Terrance Drew also gave a presentation in which he said, “St Kitts and Nevis is a developing island which faces many challenges, especially regarding climate changes. Recently, St Kitts and Nevis contributed to the global efforts in order to find the collective solution for the issue the region encounters.
He also mentioned what St Kitts and Nevis government is doing to tackle the effects of climate change in their country. He explained that they promised to reduce the amount of carbon emissions by 61% by 2030 compared to what they were emitting in 2010 as part of their participation in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gases that damage the ozone layer.
PM Terrance Drew further added that St Kitts is truly blessed with sunlight, which the government also uses to generate solar power, wind, and geothermal energy reserves, especially on the island of Nevis.
Moreover, St Kitts and Nevis government is working hard to adopt innovative climate-related practices and strategies that can lead towards behavioural change and develop existing approaches to keep up with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The administration of St Kitts and Nevis also adopted some new initiatives which can raise economic activity within the country, providing employment opportunities and significant financial growth for businesses.
