She shared that they had a huge part to play in her journey, talking about one of her works, she confessed she had written “The Day I Found out I was Black” while reading these poets. “Nikki Giovanni opened a door and I so wish we’d gotten the chance to meet.” Jones said. expressing her deep appreciation for the artist.
Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni, who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee is one of the first pioneers of black people rights. She was good friends with Rosa Parks, another black rights activist.
She worked closely with several legendary people, including Aretha Franklin and learned from their experiences to fight for the rights of the community.
