Cape Town: Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department of City of Cape Town in association with 21-strong group organised the pop-up exhibition under Emerging Artists Programme. The exhibition was observed at the First Thursday event, where emerging artists from across the city showcased their talent through their work.
The exhibition was held at the SA Sendinggestig Museum in Long Street, which brought together the emerging artists, as each shared a personal story that connects deeply to themes of identity, migration, land, heritage and language.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that for many artists it was their first time exhibiting work and introducing their talent to a wider audience.
The event marked a significant step in their creative journeys. It is a privilege to give these talented artists a platform to share their incredible work with the public.
Artists who participated in the exhibition, captured experiences that resonated with their unique voices. They showcased their talent through different mediums of art such as drawing, photography, painting and sculpture.
Their displayed art forms shared stories which reflected the diverse identities and backgrounds that make up the country today, as each piece adds to a larger conversation about community and self-expression.
As per the sources, these artists come from various suburbs across the Cape Town considering Kuils River, Diep River, Mitchells Plain, Newlands, Parklands, Heideveld, Muizenberg, Mowbray Langa, Parow, Belhar, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Salt River, Atlantis and Milnerton.
Notably, the Emerging Artists Programme supports under-resourced artists in the early stage of their careers and provides them facilities. It provides them training, mentorship, along with networking opportunities and exhibition platforms.
Furthermore, the Community, Arts and Culture Development (CACD) Department will host another First Thursdays pop-up exhibition on December 05, 2024. The department will also observe an Exhibition Readiness Workshop on November 23, 2024 to help artists with any kind of preparation.
