Kenya: The Port of Mombasa has successfully concluded its latest cruise tourism season with the arrival of the MS Viking Yidun. It is the ninth cruise vessel to dock at the port during the season. The cruise season attracted over 6,000 international tourists to Kenya’s coast and highlighted the country’s growing appeal as a leading cruise tourism destination in the region.
MS Viking Yidun is operated by the Viking Ocean Cruises and made history as the first cruise liner from Asia to call at the Port of Mombasa. The vessel carried a majority of Chinese tourists and marked an important milestone in Kenya’s efforts to diversify its tourism markets and strengthen ties with Asian travellers.
The ship departed from the Port of Shanghai on June 04, 2026 and undertook an extensive voyage that includes visits to 27 ports across 16 countries in Asia and Africa. Upon arriving in Mombasa, the vessel carried 717 guests and 489 crew members. During their one-day stay, passengers participated in organised city tours, cultural excursions and wildlife game drives, that offered them an opportunity to experience Kenya’s rich heritage and world-renowned tourism attractions.
The vessel received a warm and colourful welcome led by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Captain William Ruto. He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to work closely with tourism stakeholders to promote cruise tourism and further position Kenya as a preferred destination for international cruise operators.
He also noted that recent investments in a modern cruise terminal have significantly enhanced the port’s capacity to receive international cruise ships. He added that KPA plans to further expand passenger amenities at the facility to improve visitor comfort and deliver a seamless travel experience.
Capt. Ruto appreciated Viking Ocean Cruises and its local shipping agent – Sturrock Shipping K. Ltd., for selecting Mombasa as one of the vessel’s destinations. He assured passengers and crew to enjoy the memorable visit and the warm hospitality for which Kenya is known. As part of the official welcome ceremony, he presented a Certificate of First Call to the ship’s master – Captain Alex Sehlstedt and commemorated the MS Viking Yidun’s maiden visit to the Port of Mombasa and marked a successful conclusion to the 2025-26 cruise season.
