Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe Republic Police praised the local public for helping them in arresting the robbers.
Police shot and killed a suspected armed robber on Saturday. The alleged robber was identified as Godfrey Njoromore, aged 48.
Godfrey was killed when he tried to run away from arresting officers in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza.
The incident followed the arrest case of Benjamin Chipiri, aged 34, over a robbery that took place on Dec 2, 2023, at a house in Zengeza 5, Chitungwiza. In that robbery, the robbers robbed US $8,164 cash, two laptops, three cellphones, solar lights and a BP testing machine, which also included other valuable materials.
A statement was given by Chipiri to the police which helped them in tracking down Njoromore, who allegedly tried to flee as the net closed on him.
According to the National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner – Paul Nyathi, the suspect died in hospital due to severe injuries.
As reported by Paul Nyathi, On Jan 6, 2024, detectives from CID Homicide acted on the received information. The cops tracked Godfrey Njoromore to Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, where he was shot in the thigh after trying to evade the arrest.
After he was shot, Godfrey Njoromore was admitted to Parirnyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he took his last breath. The police have recovered the laptop, solar light, BP testing machine and an empty magazine of an FN Browning pistol.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi appreciated the public members for their support and assistance in providing the accurate information that led to the arrest of suspects.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police applauds members of the public for supplying useful information to the police and reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against armed robbery syndicates which involve both local and foreign suspects,” said Paul Nyathi.
As per the sources, over 2200 robbers were convicted by the courts last year alone. More than 700 are still undergoing trials as the National Prosecuting Authority and the Zimbabwe Republic Police intensify their fight against crime.
Reportedly, Harare and Bulawayo Metropolitan provinces topped the list of convictions. 412 male armed robbers and two females were convicted in Harare, while 189 males were convicted in Bulawayo.
Matabeleland North recorded the least number of convictions, as only two were found guilty of armed robbery. Whereas, Mashonaland Central came second with just four convictions.
