Zambia: Two people have died while three others have sustained injuries in a road traffic accident. The unfortunate accident happened in Gwembe District of Southern Province.
The accident happened around 10:30 hours along Gwembe-Munyumbwe road which is 15 Kilometers East of Gwembe Town. Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka shared the details of the accident with the media in an official statement.
According to the statement, the accident happened due to excessive speed of one of the drivers. The driver lost control of his vehicle and was not able to manage a curve whilst descending a slope.
Meanwhile, the vehicle veered off the road to the left-hand side and overturned on the road. One of the deceased victims has been identified as 33 year old Henry Mwape wbo was a resident of Kabwata Compound in Lusaka.
Mwape was driving the Scania Light Truck bearing registration number ABF 1821 at the time of the accident. The vehicle was going from West to the Eastern direction. The other deceased victim was also a passenger in this vehicle.
He has been identified as 35 year old Kennedy Kanyemba, resident of Kanyama compound in Lusaka. The second victim sustained head injuries, fractured left arm, body pains and later died at Gwembe Hospital.
“The driver sustained head injuries and died on the spot and the motor vehicle was extensively damaged,” Daka said.
Commissioner Daka further shared the details of the victims who sustained injuries as a result of the accident. The 28 year old constable Siazyombo of Gwembe Police station was injured in the road accident.
He was on escort duties and sustained painful and bruised left arm, chest pains. He was taken to the Monze Mission Hospital for his treatment. The other two victims are Kasamba Banji Makumba and Andrew Simuchimba.
The former is working in the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) Gwembe Office. She is a resident of Mainza Chona compound in Monze ZCA road and suffered chest pains along with head and leg injuries.
Andrew Simuchimba is working at the Zambia News and Information Service (ZANIS) Gwembe Office. He also sustained a painful left leg and bruised left arm.
“The three passengers sustained slight injuries of which they were treated and discharged at Gwembe District Hospital,” he said.
Commissioner Daka indicated that the same truck was ferrying some relief Bags of mealie meal from Lusaka. The meals were supposed to be distributed in Siampande area in Chief Chipepo’s chiefdom.
Commissioner Daka said from the 400 bags of relief maize that was being ferried, 162 bags have been destroyed while 238 are intact.
