Road accident in Kasama claims 4 lives, 5 injured

Four people have died as a result of a road traffic accident which happened at Misamfu, five kilometres north of Kasama

Zambia: Four people have died as a result of a road traffic accident which happened at Misamfu, five kilometres north of Kasama. The accident also resulted in five other passengers getting varying degrees of injuries.

The incident happened in the early hours of the morning at 05:00 on Monday along the Kasama-Mbala Road. The vehicles that were involved in the accident a Tata truck and a Toyota Vitz Vehicle.

The vehicles were both travelling in opposite directions,  with the truck travelling south and the toyata driving towards the north. The Toyota Vitz Vehicle was being driven by 21-year-old Gift Bwalya, and had a total of three passengers on board.

The truck collided with the Toyota vehicle, leading to the deaths of all the occupants of the car. The driver of the Tata truck failed to keep to his side and in the process, hit the Toyota Vitz vehicle

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, the driver sustained fatal head injuries.

He also suffered fractured legs and died on the spot after the collision happened. All the passengers that he was travelliing with, also suffered multiple injuries  and died shortly after the accident.

One of the passengers who died in the accident has been identified as 51 year old Charles Mwape. He had sustained a deep cut on the left shoulder along with fatal head injuries.

The second passenger identified as Joan Bwalya is said to be between 40 and 45 years sustained a fractured left leg. He also had a fatal head injuries along with 24 year old Blessings Mapalo, the final of the four deceased victims

All the persons in the Toyota Vitz vehicle were the residents of the Namulundu Compound Kasama District.

Meanwhile, The Tata truck involved in the accident was the property of Zambia Forest and Forestry Industries Corporation-ZAFFICO. The vehicle was being driven by 37 year old Robert Sinyangwe who fled the scene immediately after the accident.

He had six passengers on board who sustained some injuries due to the accident. One of the passengers Amos Mulenga sustained a suspected internal injuries and was unconscious.

All the other victims are receiving treatment at the local hospital and have reported minor injuries.
