Cape Town: The South African Weather Service has issued an advisory around expected inclement weather from Sunday, May 10, 2026 until Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Two cold fronts are set to make landfall – the first on Sunday morning and the second on Monday.
Reportedly, the frontal systems will result in disruptive rainfall, leading to potential localised flooding, i.e. strong to gale force winds and damaging waves along coastal areas. All relevant City of Cape Town services are on standby to deal with any weather-related impacts.
The South African Weather Service team ask residents, to put in place mitigation measures, in order to protect their properties, including:
- Clearing gutters and any other blockages on their property
- Checking roofs for any leaks or loose sheets
- Securing any loose items and materials like garden furniture, etc., that could be vulnerable to wind gusts
- Digging trenches to lead water away from their homes if in informal settlements
- Raising the floor of their dwelling above ground level to minimise the risk of flooding
SA Weather Service team has further advised the Disaster Risk Management Centre of the following weather warning, and signalled towards orange level and yellow level warnings for the period of Sunday, May 10 May to Tuesday, May 12, that:
- Orange level six warning for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of roads, low-lying bridges, and formal as well as informal settlements
- Orange level six warning for damaging winds and waves leading to danger to navigation at sea and damage to coastal infrastructure along the coast between Lambert’s Bay and Plettenberg Bay
- Yellow level two warning for damaging winds
- The Disaster Coordinating Team (DCT) will be activated to coordinate the City’s response to weather-related impacts
The team urged the public to follow official updates on social media and their preferred media channels closely. They also requested to report any emergency incident, if occur, to the Public Emergency Communication Centre.
