Cape Town: The city has announced the offering of a sports stadium for Palestine National Football matches.
The City of Cape Town’s government has now allowed the free usage of stadiums, and officials can also use the stadium for sponsorship for Palestine National Football matches.
As per the sources, the City of Cape Town will support the upcoming exhibition matches that are going to be held by South African Football Association (SAFA) between Palestine National Football Team and Local Invitational XIs.
Talking about the offering Mayor of the town – Geordin Hill-Lewis said that Cape Town is looking forward to welcome the Palestinian National Football Team to the city.
The mayor added, “We are glad and proud to support this event. We hope that Capetonians will come out to enjoy these matches and show support for peace and justice in Palestine.”
Mayor Lewis mentioned that it is a symbolic gesture of showing support towards two nations, “This is an important symbolic way of supporting the two-state solution and the full recognition of Palestinian statehood.”
Reportedly, the city’s sponsorship includes waiver of rental hire costs for the two matches at Athlone Stadium. SAFA has scheduled for Feb 11, 2024 and Feb 18, 2024.
Moreover, the city will also grant R400,000 for event support services that will include traffic, waste management and all other related services to ensure a successful event.
Member of Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith stated that Sports have played an important role in the democratic journey and he is proud that the City of Cape Town is partnering with SAFA to host the Palestinian National Football Team.
Talking about the sponsorship he mentioned, “This sponsorship aligns with our past sponsorships of similar sporting events in the city and we are looking forward to two great days at Athlone Stadium.”
The same country’s South African Football Association will reveal further details about the exhibition matches in due course.
