St. Kitts and Nevis: Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries & Marine Resources – Samal Duggins attended the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit 2026 (AACIS ’26). There he emphasised the need to rethink agriculture as a means of survival and as a driver of future economic growth and regional prosperity.
Duggins stated that their vision speaks to deeper collaboration, stronger systems and a commitment to ensure that value remains within their own ecosystems. Advancing a shared agricultural future, he said that they must build an African-Caribbean agricultural corridor, the one where:
- goods move efficiently
- capital flows confidently
- Innovation is shared freely
Considering the AACIS 2026, the regional voices continued to reflect on the impact of the summit. From St. Kitts and Nevis to Abuja, Nigeria (Africa), it captured perspectives, partnerships and shared vision that emerged from the event.
Minister of Agriculture of Montserrat – John Osborne highlighted the significance of strengthening cultural and economic ties between the Caribbean and Africa. He emphasised the importance of moving beyond food security to food sovereignty, while ensuring greater control over production and the agricultural value chain.
Osborne underscored the opportunities for farmers to access wider markets, reduce costs, and benefit from stronger regional collaboration. He also noted that unity remains central to advance agriculture across the Caribbean. He acknowledged the leadership of Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and Minister Samal Duggins, for their commendable role in fostering regional collaboration and bringing Caribbean partners together through this engagement.
Other delegates such as Fisher of the Year 2025 winner – Mervin Maynard also took a moment to reflect and unfold the impact of AACIS 2026. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be in Abuja, Nigeria, and shared his appreciation for the growing unity between Africa and the Caribbean.
Maynard also offered a reflection for fishers back home and noted that hard work and consistency are what ultimately determine the outcomes.
Crop Farmer and Farmer of the Year 2025 winner – Denise Gillard shared purpose that emerges from AACIS 2026. She highlighted the critical importance of food security and noted that it remains the foundation of survival and sustainability.
She also spoke on the value of engaging with fellow farmers—sharing knowledge, building connections, and creating opportunities for continued collaboration beyond the conference.
Denise further expressed appreciation for the support received from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. She also highlighted the role of Samal Duggins, in standing with farmers and actively supporting the sector. This reflected on her journey as a woman in agriculture. She encouraged others to remain resilient acknowledgingthe challenges, and also emphasising the importance of perseverance, determination, and staying committed to their goals.
Another delegate present at the AACIS 2026 was Devin Richardson, who is also known as ‘Buckie Got It’. He represented the livestock sector, that described the opportunity to be in Nigeria as a significant and humbling experience. He also highlighted the importance of representing St. Kitts and Nevis at the global stage.
Richardson emphasised the vital role of food security and noted the importance of livestock production in feeding the nation and supporting everyday life. He expressed gratitude towards Samal Duggins and all, who were involved in making the opportunity possible. He also shared a message of encouragement, to continue farming, believe in your work, and stay committed to your craft. Your time will come, stated Samal Duggins.
