Sarrosut Nehenny from Pamplemousses celebrates her 100th birthday

Mauritius: The government of Mauritius celebrated one more 100th birthday of the local resident Sarrosut Nehenny, who was born at Union Park Estate on 03 June 1923, celebrated her 100th birthday, on 03 June 2023, at Mountain View Hall in Khoyratty.

Mauritius: The government of Mauritius celebrated one more 100th birthday of the local resident Sarrosut Nehenny, who was born at Union Park Estate on 03 June 1923, celebrated her 100th birthday, on 03 June 2023, at Mountain View Hall in Khoyratty.

In that context, an official ceremony was organised by the Mauritius Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity in order to honour the new centenarian. On this occasion of her birthday, Nehenny received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 26,203, another one to the tune of Rs 10,000 from the National Solidarity Fund, a mixer grinder, a bouquet; a centenarian medal, and a certificate.

Nehenny, born Munshi, had one brother and two sisters, who have all passed away. Her father worked as a policeman, while her mother passed away at the birth of Nehenny. She never attended school and got married to Narain Nehenny, who was a shopkeeper.

She was a housewife and was breeding animals to help the family. During this union, the couple gave birth to 15 children. Amongst them, one son and four daughters are alive. Nehenny became a widow at the age of 57. She has 22 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She is a pure vegetarian and likes all kinds of fruits. She also likes to eat snacks and particularly puff pastry rolls. She enjoys watching television. She has a very calm and composed temper and a very good personality. She has a hearing impairment and walks with the help of a walking stick.

As per the latest statistics from the Welfare and Elderly Persons’ Protection Unit of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity of Mauritius reveal that the Republic of Mauritius has recorded, as of 02 June 2023, a total of 166 centenarians from Mauritius and Rodrigues.

In Mauritius, the number of female and male centenarians stands at 138 and 17, respectively, while in Rodrigues, the number of centenarians recorded is nine females and two males.
