South Africa: Four robbery suspects were arrested, and two firearms and a vehicle used in a robbery were recovered in a joint operation between Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the Verulam SAPS & members of the community in Buffelsdraai – KZN today (Friday).
Reaction Officers were dispatched to New Glasgow Road at approximately 09:21 after residents reported shots being fired.
The caller was unable to provide any further details. On arrival, RUSA Members met with Metro Policemen who confirmed that a scrapyard had been robbed by five suspects. They were passing by when they were flagged down by the victim.
The suspects opened fire on the Officers in an attempt to evade arrest. One of the robbers was immediately arrested, and a grey Toyota Verso used in the robbery was recovered. A second suspect was pursued by the public and apprehended approximately 200 meters from the scene.
Reaction Officers received information that the remaining suspects were spotted fleeing on Buffelsdraai Road in Redcliffe – KZN. Officers converged and surrounded the area. The SAPS K9 Unit arrived shortly thereafter, and two of the robbers were tracked to an informal residence, where they were arrested. A homemade firearm and a pistol were recovered in their possession (picture 3).
One of the suspects was released on parole in 2021 after serving part of his sentence for murder.
