South Africa: The team of Reaction Unit South Africa arrested a robbery suspect, and two replica firearms were also recovered by an off-duty member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) in Canelands – KZN this afternoon (Wednesday).
The Reaction Officer was travelling to Hazelmere – KZN at approximately 21:21 when he was flagged down by the public requesting assistance for a female who had just been robbed.
According to the victim, three men in a grey Suzuki Dzire approached her and produced firearms while one of their accomplices remained in the vehicle. The suspects robbed her of her cell phone and cash before they fled in their getaway vehicle.
The RUSA Member called for additional backup while he set out in search of the robbers who were spotted on Hazelmere Road.
The suspect’s vehicle sped up when they realised they were being followed. A chase ensued when the robbers turned into a road leading to a dead end. They drove into a bush before they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The Reaction Officers pursued and apprehended the driver.
During an interview, the suspect informed Reaction Officers that he was employed as a driver for an E-Hailing company. He claimed that the three suspects were passengers who hired him to travel to Hazelmere. During the trip, they drew firearms and allegedly forced him into the rear seat. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of two replica firearms and the victim’s cell phone.
An extensive search was conducted for the remaining suspects; however, no further arrests were made.
