South Africa: Phumala, the facilitator of the sewing women, spoke about the various activities that the ladies take part in, such as embroidery, fabric painting and sewing.
She added that the designs would be displayed at Mendi Arts Centre for customers to look at and hopefully buy some of them.
Nozuko Mangwana: said she heard about this through a friend of hers and had no idea there were such opportunities. “Before I came here, I was doing mostly beads and selling them. I am actually in love with what I am doing right now, and so excited that our skills will be recognised and hoping that one day we will have a huge sponsor. This project will definitely bring change to the community, and I am so excited that I will be teaching other people how to embroider, paint and knit.
Zanele Nojilana said this is her first time ever doing this, as she only focused on doing beads, specialising in scarves and Tommy shoes.
She heard about this project and has been in it for five weeks now. “It’s brand new with great facilitators. Learning something new and actually doing it practically is the most exciting thing ever. We are beyond blessed and so appreciative.”
