St Kitts and Nevis: The Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Denzil Douglas extended his greetings on the occasion of International Men’s Day. The day is celebrated every year on November 19.
The theme of the 2023 edition of the celebration was “ZERO MALE SUICIDE”. Every year, the day provides an opportunity for the world to examine and celebrate men’s accomplishments. The day highlights men’s positive contributions to their work, family, and society.
The first International Women’s Day was celebrated by the UN in 1975. However, it took twenty more years for the world to realize the significance of highlighting the men and their accomplishments.
Men’s rights activists had been discussing the idea of designating a day to celebrate men for several years. Dr Jerome Teelucksingh of the University of the West Indies conceived the idea, and the day was first celebrated in 1999.
Dr Teelucksingh celebrated Men’s Day on his father’s birthday. That was the first time men’s contributions were acknowledged internationally.
The theme of this year’s celebration, Zero Male Suicide, highlights the importance of good mental health. A person’s mental well-being is an aspect often overlooked in both men and women.
