The first International Women’s Day was celebrated by the UN in 1975. However, it took twenty more years for the world to realize the significance of highlighting the men and their accomplishments.

Men’s rights activists had been discussing the idea of designating a day to celebrate men for several years. Dr Jerome Teelucksingh of the University of the West Indies conceived the idea, and the day was first celebrated in 1999.

Dr Teelucksingh celebrated Men’s Day on his father’s birthday. That was the first time men’s contributions were acknowledged internationally.

The theme of this year’s celebration, Zero Male Suicide, highlights the importance of good mental health. A person’s mental well-being is an aspect often overlooked in both men and women.

Dr Douglas announced that they will address the social, mental, emotional, psychological and physical challenges that men face. Additionally International Men’s Day celebrated the many achievements of men in:

  • Culture
  • Politics
  • Economics
  • Education
  • Technology and more

The politician encouraged the men of St Kitts and Nevis to be courageous and strong. He asked them to serve as leaders of our communities, families, churches etc.
