St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew joined the CARICOM community in attending the Peace Talks to resolve the Guyana-Venezuela Border Dispute. Special talks were hosted by St Vincent and the Grenadines on Thursday, inviting all regional leaders including Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The meeting was convened by the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, as President Pro Tempore of the Community of the States of Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAC).
During the meeting, St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Gonsalves wanted to facilitate talks between the president of Guyana, Irfaan Ali and The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.
The assembled leaders of the CARICOM and the CELAC acknowledge that there are complexities within the border disputes. Accordingly, the meeting aimed to foster a diplomatic solution to the issue, however no concrete agreement was reached.
The leaders tried to make sure that the resolution can continue to uphold the regional stability and cooperation of the CARICOM.
PM Terrance Drew travelled to St Vincent and the Grenadines immediately after the leader of the opposition. Mark Brantley delivered their opening remarks at the Budget 2024 debate. The critical meeting was convened on the same day as the 2024 Budget Debate.
His presence in St Vincent and The Grenadines signalled his commitment and dedication to supporting the other leaders of the CARICOM. Additionally, it is also significant of his commitment to the regional stability of the CARICOM.
The Caribbean Community is hoping that the high level talks will help in resolving the border disputes and controversy of Guyana-Venezuela in a peaceful and diplomatic manner.
