Tonota District hosts Save our Rivers adventure race

The 1st edition of the Save our Rivers adventure race popularly known as Shashe River Marathon was hosted on Saturday.

Botswana: The 1st edition of the Save our Rivers adventure race popularly known as Shashe River Marathon was hosted on Saturday. The members of the Tonota District administration were present at the event to show their support.

The leaders of the administration have shared that the aim of the race was to spread awareness about the protection of lakes and water bodies of the district. The pollution of lakes in the district will make it difficult for the people to access better healthcare opportunities.

The officials have shared that it is important for the people to understand the importance of maintaining the rivers and protecting them from being exposed to further pollutants. The members of the district administration have accordingly organized the first edition of the first edition of the Save our Rivers adventure race.

The event was organized on Saturday, under the guidance of the district administration. The authorities of Tonota also shared several images from the event on their social media account.

The officials have shared that the day began with a warm up session. Later, the races were kicked off  with 21KM, followed by 1OKM and 5 KM races respectively.

The Tonota district leadership graced the event and participated in the 5KM race as well as the leadership fun race. Shashe River Marathon took place in Shashe River, between Mathangwane and Borolong villages.

The Save our rivers adventure race served as a platform for all the members of the community to discuss river conservation and environmental sustainability. In addition to the race, the event also featured a number of other activities.

The activities included amongst others: Aerobics, adventure race, health screening stalls , traditional dance.

The various organizations functioning in the district held educational stalls and the event also featured beach volleyball.

The event was officiated by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Fidelis Molao who highlighted on the importance and benefits of saving the rivers. The event sought to bring the people together to work towards the mandate of environmental protection.
